FLYING LOTUS

Flying Lotus - "Masquatch" ft. DOOM

New TracksContributor JonesComment

Flying Lotus' production on his new single "Masquatch" is a seemingly slowed down iteration of his production on his most recent album "You're Dead!" The stomp, the rattle, and the wonderfully organic feel are all present. My mind wanders to a desert scene with wind sifting through the limbs of a 1,000-year-old dead tree.

At a slower tempo, however, FlyLo's production loses its frantic mania and instead co-opts a deeply menacing face. The synths that hang over the production and occasional jazz noodling take on their full spiritual effect, now being used only sparsely. As far as DOOM's performance on the song, it is a little too low in the mix to be heard clearly. Not only is it overshadowed talent-wise by FlyLo, it is sonically overpowered. His delivery's weird placement in the mix at times enhances the song, however. With his audibility surging and receding in a similar manner to the beat, he magnifies the song's disorienting qualities. This slower direction is one that I feel that FlyLo should flesh out more in the future, whether in singles or on a full length, and if collaborating with DOOM will lead him to do that then I'm looking forward to more collaborations between them.

Flying Lotus - "Medication Meditation" ft. Krayzie Bone

https://soundcloud.com/flyinglotus/medication-meditation-ft-krayzie-bone With the expanded edition of Grand Theft Auto V comes a whopping 162 new songs across the game's 17 radio stations. Flying Lotus' Fly Lo FM has been supplemented with new music from Danny Brown, Freddie Gibbs, and DOOM to name just a few. Above you can stream a new Flying Lotus-produced track "Medication Meditation," which features a couple of verses from Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's Krayzie Bone, background vocals from frequent FlyLo collaborator Niki Randa, and of course there's some slick bass work from Thundercat all over this thing. Now, this song may not offer the free-jazz euphoria of You're Dead!, but I sure as hell wouldn't mind blasting this in the car while cruising around San Andreas.

GTA V is out on next-gen consoles now via Rockstar Games, with a limited edition box set of the expanded soundtrack due out December 9 via Mass Appeal. Here's our review of Flying Lotus' latest record You're Dead!:

Flying Lotus - "Ready Err Not" [NSFW]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XDhz5kanYk First off, be sure to heed that NSFW label up there: this will almost certainly be the most disturbing music video you'll see all year.

For You're Dead! cut "Ready Err Not," Flying Lotus enlisted the talents of Salad Fingers creator David Firth to lend the track a freakish and downright perverted set of visuals. Even if you're familiar with Firth's surreally horrific style, you may find the content of the video shocking, as he arguably takes things to a new, gruesome level. But it's ultimately a match made in heaven, Firth's vision matching the grisly promotional art of master body horror depicter Shintaro Kago. I'm of the opinion these sorts of images better suit the album than Hiro Murai's comparatively tame approach to "Never Catch Me" earlier last month, but certainly both takes are mostly effective, albeit in very different ways. Watch Firth's above and revel in the messed-upness!

You're Dead! is out now via Warp and it's a glorious free-jazz nightmare! Review below:

Flying Lotus - "Coronus, The Terminator"

New TracksadminComment

As October 7th inches closer, the more psyched I'm getting for the next Flying Lotus release, You're Dead! I really enjoyed the track FlyLo dropped with Kendrick Lamar, but this new cut titled "Coronus, The Terminator" has an entirely different vibe to it.

The groove of this song comes on slowly, and there are some stunningly beautiful group vocals that grow in emotional intensity as the song draws on. In a way, it reminds me a bit of the strange stuff Cee-Lo used to dabble in on releases like his debut LP--but way more slow and dramatic, of course.

Given the track falls just short of three minutes, it's not exactly an immense experience on its own, but FlyLo's never been huge on the whole single thing anyway. Surely, this will be track that is complimented by the context of the record it's placed on, and I'm looking forward to hear how it's all pulled together this October.

http://youtu.be/k4Oz8UmUXbg *THIS IS A POWER 106 WORLD PREMIERE* So You're Dead!'s much-hyped Kendrick Lamar feature has been unveiled and it's just as *LA LEAKERS* stellar as you could have hoped. There was certainly no doubt in my mind that K.Dot would kill it over FlyLo's alternately *AIR HORN* frenetic and smooth, jazzy production. Now I'm actually kind of glad Kendrick took all his beats, even if *LA LEAKERS* it has resulted in the next Captain Murphy album getting put on hold. I'd really be down for *AIR HORN* a whole album of this. Listen above and *THIS IS A POWER 106 WORLD PREMIERE* enjoy!

Flying Lotus - Ideas+drafts+loops

Download: Flying Lotus - Ideas+drafts+loops Flying Lotus has announced that he's entering the mixing stage of his fifth studio album, likely due out early next year. To tide his fans over, he's shared a free compilation of unreleased material, and because this is FlyLo; the production on these tracks are just as stellar as that of some of the best electronica you've heard this year. The tape also has myriad guest artists - among them are Shabazz Palaces, The Underachievers, Until the Quiet Comes collaborator Niki Randa, alter ego Captain Murphy, and Thundercat even turns up on a remix of Kanye's "Black Skinhead." Grab it above and enjoy!

Hopefully we'll be getting another project from Captain Murphy soon, as well. A reminder that his mixtape Duality was one of the most sensational trips of 2012:

Jonwayne - Cassette 3: The Marion Morrison Mixtape

New Trackstheneedledrop1 Comment

Rapper and producer Jonwayne has a new mixtape available through Stones Throw Records. Cassette 3 is a delightfully whacky and eclectic affair, beginning with the soulful and jazzy "Ode to Mortality" and going on to co-opt the clunky, jarring instrumental from Pusha T's "Numbers On the Boards" on the following track.

The tape also features verses from fellow Brainfeeder affiliates Jeremiah Jae, Zeroh, Oliver the 2nd, and even Flying Lotus himself (under his Captain Murphy moniker.) Enjoy!
