The Men - "Pearly Gates"

New TracksadminComment

If you can expect anything from New York's The Men, it's that you'll never know what to expect from them.

The band's discography thus far has been quite the trip, showing no limits in their ability to imitate the sounds of noise rock, post-hardcore, pop rock, and even country. In fact, their foray into that last genre made for my least favorite Men album thus far. That influence rings true in this new track of theirs as well, "Pearly Gates"; however, I think this fiery backwoods rock number is paying off big-time. It's like what would have happened if the punk movement had somehow preceded Southern, horn-backed bar rock. There's loads of guitar slingin', piano bangin', and horn squealin' to be had here. Pay close attention, and try not to miss a single second of the action!

The Men - "Turn Your Color"

Next month, The Men will release an all-acoustic 5-song EP actually recorded around a campfire while the band was holed up in a house in upstate New York. The project is aptly titled Campfire Songs and will feature re-imagined versions of New Moon-era tracks "I Saw Her Face," "The Seeds," and "Water Babies," as well as two new songs, "Turn Your Color" and "Patience;" the former of which can be streamed above. Enjoy the adeptly-crafted ambiance!

Campfire Songs is due out October 15 via Sacred Bones. Below, check out the review for their latest LP, the determinedly rustic New Moon, released earlier this year:

Destruction Unit - "Bumpy Road"

Arizona loud rock outfit Destruction Unit have shared the song, "Bumpy Road" from their upcoming LP Deep Trip. With the previously released "The World on Drugs" and this new track, which is laden with noisy psychedelic grooves and clouded vocals; it appears as though the album will live up to its title. Check it!

Deep Trip is due for release August 20 via Sacred Bones.

Crystal Stilts - "Star Crawl"

One of New York's trippiest, strangest, and most surreal garage rock acts has announced a new album--title: Nature Noir--and you can stream the first track to drop from it via the embed above. While I wouldn't exactly call it a "hit," the band does manage deliver something that's simultaneously blissful and awkward. Ah, ambivalence!

Check a glowing review for the band's last record below:

Destruction Unit - "The World On Drugs"

When Arizona's Destruction Unit named this track "The World On Drugs," I guess they weren't messing around. The song feels like a multi-phased trip that starts like a piece of hardcore punk, but suddenly shapeshifts into some slow-moving heavy psych. All the while, the band's guitars are loud, distorted, phased, and enveloping.

While the song doesn't really have a strong hook or melodic flavor, the riffs are unrelenting and the vocals come through as being pretty eccentric. Give a listen, go wild, break something. Enjoy!

Pharmakon - "Ache"

Given the copious amount of what look like maggots on the front cover of Pharmakon's Abandon, it should be pretty clear that this music is not for the squeamish. What this one-woman power electronics project offers in terms of sound is pretty abrasive. The song streaming above, "Ache," delivers ear-piercing tones, harsh screams, and metallic juts of percussion that attack the senses in a notably thrilling way.
