Deerhoof - "Your Dystopic Creation Doesn't Fear You" ft. Awkwafina

Deerhoof makes its mark on the Adult Swim Singles Program with "Your Dystopic Creation Doesn't Fear You." Probably one of the wordier titles in the series, and it features a gritty opening verse from "My Vag" rapper Awkwafina, who fits the band's angular riffing remarkably well.

The track appears on the band's upcoming album Mountain Moves, which features many more collaborations - Lætitia Sadier, Xenia Rubinos, and Matana Roberts just to name a few. It's out September 8 via Joyful Noise.

Of all the team-ups and collabs in recent memory, this has to be among the most chaotic, noisy and boisterous of them all. Greg Saunier and Brian Chippendale are two drummers behind some of the more experimental punk bands of the late 90's and early 2000's, namely Deerhoof and Lightning Bolt. They are regarded as formidable musicians in their own rights, as well as being close friends.

The above album is effectively a half hour of two men playing drums as hard and ferocious as they can, dipping and feeling each other’s style for volume and rhythm dynamics, using each other’s energy to build and drop in crescendo after crescendo of drive, power, and skill. Recommended for anyone into free-improvised percussion music. And if you have time, watch the documentary Checking in at 20, which is paired with the album. It gives some fascinating insight into the two drummers and the project.

Deerhoof - "Exit Only"

Deerhoof compliments one of the most unsettling and noisy tunes on their latest record with a strange video about interconnectedness. We seem to have a few twin-like characters who share pain in the same way a one-way street shares traffic. Whatever happens to one seems to impact the other, and in really weird ways, too.

I was starting to wonder if this series of events was more metaphorical than literal, but then the video went off the deep end as guitarist Ed Rodriguez busts through a wall looking like a member of the Ramones as he sends sparks from his guitar's pickups.

As confusing as it may be, it's still pretty awesome. Oh, hey, just like the band itself. Woah! Mind blown, man! Check out a review of Deerhoof's latest album here. Also, kudos to director Vice Cooler.
