Jack White - "Lazaretto"
Videos1 Commenthttp://youtu.be/qI-95cTMeLM We'd been skeptical of Jack White's solo career since the bit-too-familiar Blunderbuss back in 2012. But he really had us reconsider his solo potential with "Lazaretto," the lead single and title track of his new album - a flashy track laden with organ, horns, some glitchy synths, and it even had a freaking fiddle solo! He reached a new level of ambition with this track, but still reveled in a bit of (I'd call deserved) self-celebration.
And now we have a video fittingly as flashy and self-celebratory to the max. Every bad-ass thing White could think of is here: shattering glass, guitar-playing shadows, audacious floral-print suits, sports cars, bucking bulls, and Jack White chest pieces. Wait, what the fuck? OK, you might argue he went too far there, but hey; it's still a killer song and a fun enough set of visuals. Enjoy!
Lazaretto's out tomorrow via White's Third Man Records. Try getting your hands on one of these crazy-ass "ULTRA LP"s!
The Black Keys - Turn Blue
Reviews2 CommentsThe Black Keys drop their most bloated and tame album to date with Turn Blue.
Jack White - "Lazaretto"
New Tracks5 CommentsHAH! Jack really came through on this new one. At first, I was a little on the fence about this whole solo thing, but he's really starting to convince me on this latest single of his, "Lazaretto."
Yeah, I understand that his voice, guitar tone, songwriting style hasn't exactly done a 180 since the demise of the White Stripes--which you could argue he had an incredible amount of control over, making it a solo project in a sense--but I think Jack comes through with a decent track and some flashy accompaniment from organ, horns, and some glitchy synths as well. Since going #1 with Blunderbuss, he's obviously making more instrumental strides and sending that ambition through the roof.
And that fiddle solo? Don't even hate.
If you didn't already know, Mr. White has a new album titled Lazaretto dropping on June 10th.
Machine Girl - WLFGRL
New Tracks5 CommentsI don't know who Machine Girl is, and I think that's the case for most people since this s/he is a relative unknown in electronic music right now. I can't say the new album I'm linking you to right now is going to change that--I mean, there isn't much in the way of a chart-topping single here--but for those patient enough to listen deeply into a well-assembled set of tracks, WLFGRL has a lot going for it.
Nearly every song on this thing is a jittery, challenging display of bombastic rhythms and off-kilter grooves. I haven't heard beats this nutty since that crazy Japanese footwork comp I mentioned a while back.
Machine Girl really pulls from a wide array of genres, including juke, footwork, house, trap, future garage, wonky, and jungle. They're all fed through a somewhat aggressive, busy, and distorted lens, which brings all of these cuts together pretty nicely. Enjoy! Oh, also, thanks to Dred Collective for helping to get this album out there!
Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks - Enter The Slasher House
ReviewsCommentWhile this new Avey Tare record has some sweet melodies on it, nearly every piece of instrumentation on this thing is burnt to a crisp with effects. A lot like the latest Animal Collective record, this album is a little overdone, and could have benefited from taking the more orthodox approach the "Little Fang" single did.
Black Lips - Underneath The Rainbow
New TracksCommentStream the new Black Lips album if ya know what's good for ya! The band seems to live up to grimy and catchy expectations with this new set of tracks, which will be out officially on the 18th of this month. Enjoy!
Tweens - "Be Mean"
New TracksCommentA bit of bubblegum-flavored garage pop from Tweens on the track "Be Mean," which addresses a somewhat common relationship issue. Ever been with someone who was just too nice? Well, whatever your answer, the song is still pretty catchy. Stream the song above, and keep an ear out for Tweens' self-titled album on April 8th.
